The area is full of hydroelectric power plants, many build by Senator Ettore Conti, the Edison company and designed by famed Architect Piero Portaluppi. Considering they were build around 1920 / 1930, it shows how almost a century ago electric energy was produced by harnessing water. The Alpe Cavalli Dam, on the creek Loranco, near Antronapiana, Italy, was built between 1922 and 1926. The lake is located in the basin of an ancient glacial lake. Lago Alpe del Cavalli is a high mountain lake at an elevation of 1.508m (4,947 ft) above the sea level, located in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola in the Italian region Piedmont.The road to reach the lake is asphalted, but pretty narrow, and very steep. The road includes 26 hairpin turns. Starting from the town of Antronapiana, at 923m, the ascent is 7,2 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 585 meters. The average percentage is 8,1%.
