Axis drone Nice Château de Valrose Nice, France. Located between the center of Nice and the hilly district of Cimiez, Chateau de Valrose is at present home to the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis. The Castle and the adjoining domain have been, in fact, the headquarters of this institution since 1965.The entire complex (which consists of the castle as such, the park and a smaller neighboring castle) was declared a historical monument 1991. It was both the age of the edifice and its architectural virtues that entitled it to the statute of historical monument. Thus, the castle was built between 1867 and 1870 by order of Baron Paul von Derwies (counselor of Tsar Alexander II), the design having been assigned to David Grimm, Antonio Crocci and Constantin Scala, not to mention the fact the construction of the park and of the small castle required the input of further architects.The gothic castle soon became a hub of the social life in Nice, but in the late 19th century, once the baron was declared bankrupt, it became the property of sundry other private owners, until is was purchased by the city of Nice (in 1950) and turned, as said, into the headquarters of the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis.- See more at www.nice-tourism.com Situés dans le quartier Valrose, les châteaux de Valrose et leur parc constituent un domaine de dix hectares entre l’avenue de Brancolar et la colline de Cimiez, au nord de Nice.
