Once upon a time, there was a young, poor medical student in Java with a passion for Indonesian antiques and history. One day an elderly European professor, who majored in the legend of Ramayana, hired him as a guide to take him to meet a stranger.The meeting place had a lonely stretch of sandy beach with the most beautiful sunset he had ever seen, adjacent to miles and miles of green paddy fields with an ancient temple in the middle. At twilight, he saw the stranger handing an object to the professor. It was a Cupu Manik – a 16th century stone bowl of three parts from where a priest used to sprinkle holy healing water over sick villagers. The student realized the priceless cultural value of the Cupu Manik, despite being new to the antique world. .Several years later, the poor student become a professional antiquarian, still searching in vain for the Cupu Manik. One evening, when visiting an antique-lover friend he saw it – the very same one he had seen in the professor’s hands. Through a lot of efforts and cost, he managed to get the Cupu Manik back. Hotel Tugu Bali, located on the beach where he first saw the Cupu Manik for the first time, is now the current home of this precious artefact. The student is the founder of Tugu Hotels, Exotic Spas and Restaurants, a small privately owned and designed collection of luxury art hotels and restaurants with a mission to bring back to life the art, soul and romance of Indonesia’s yesteryears.Today, his vast collection of Indonesian art and antiques are housed exclusively in these beautiful boutique museum hotels and restaurants for the world to experience.
