Il Palmento video

Il Palmento video Contrada Cupa Vitamara Strada Comunale 166, Locorotondo BA, Italy/ IL PALMENTO takes its name from Palmentum, the old roman structure for grape pressing. It was located in an old village (the so called “chiazzeil”) dated from 1780 to 1820 and used by the farmers who lived there. Within the village (maybe one of the few fenced villages), everybody could use common properties such as the oven, the stable, the farmyard, the well so that people could share most part of their family and working life. “The Palmento” was a reference point for the village: it was also used for wine-making whereas each family had a “capasone”, that is a huge earthenware pot, and could produce his own wine. Within this big room there was a wallen tank where grape was pressed barefoot. Under the tank there was a logline where the liquid coming from pressing was canalized up to a bigger tank where it started fermenting. There were two adjoning tanks connected by a hole whose main function was to trasform must into “cotto”. The concentration of must was of fundamental importance since it avoided chemical addicting to wine. With the passing of time many families living in the village moved abroad and the Grassi family take over the property that was converted in a farm-holidays until, thanks to “Regione Puglia” and to the latest owners, it was transformed into a Hotel and Trulli Relais and became a modern testimony of a long and ancient wine-making local tradition. Here you can stay in old “trulli” tasting local food and flavours in a very striking atmosphere evoking an enchanting past. Nowadays old rooms have been converted in a suite and named after a grape variety (“primitivo, megroamaro, verdeca, fiano, trebbiano, bianco d’alessano ,malvasia, moscato selvatico, pampanuto, moscato bianco, aglianico e garganica) in order to remember the old wine path.Hotel
