Joe Davis Stadium Aerial View Leeman Ferry Road Southwest, Huntsville, Alabama, United States The Huntsville Stars, who came into existence in 1985 as a Class AA Southern League franchise, are now the Biloxi (Miss.) Shuckers. Trouble is, Biloxi's new stadium is still under construction. It won't be playable for opening day in April; full construction is likely not to be completed until August. The Shuckers, who have a lease with the City of Huntsville on Joe Davis Stadium through next season, will be forced to play some games there early this summer. General manager Buck Rogers said that no definite number was announced during this week's baseball Winter Meeting in San Diego.Beyond that, what will become of the park that was once considered the gem of the Southern League?According to City Administrator John Hamilton, the Joe Davis Stadium site is the target location for an indoor athletic complex to serve as anchor for the north end of the ongoing John Hunt Park redevelopment."What we envision has not changed drastically from the master plan," Hamilton said. "It's just a component that's moved to the Joe Davis site."The site is ideal, he said, because of the existing roadways and parking. The facility, which would involve a public-private partnership, could hold basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer and other events. It would also have facilities for private coaching, such as indoor batting cages. There is no particular model, but instead the city is "getting good ideas from multiple places," Hamilton said."You would see our local community using it routinely for practices, workouts and their competitions and also see large tournaments coming in," Hamilton said. There is no firm date for the construction but Hamilton said "we would hope that we could be able to start shortly after (the Stars) leave and we tear down the stadium and clean up the site."Work is well underway on the John Hunt master plan, which will eventually include two more championship soccer fields, an expansion of the tennis center and another sheet of ice at the IcePlex."The council put money into the capital plan for the next 10 years to invest in John Hunt," Hamilton said. "We purposely did not seek one batch of money.
