9th Travesia Sagrada Maya - Opening Ceremony - Riviera Maya, Mexico/Xcaret, Riviera Maya, México/We had the pleasure and honor to attend and film, the 9th Sacred Mayan Journey, an ancient ceremony in which women and men guided by strong helmsmen, honor their ancestors performing in the same way as them, the crossing from Pole (Xcaret) to Kuzamil island (Cozumel), for the sacred message of the goddess Ixchel in Mexico.The 300 canoers left on May 22nd at sunrise and arrived in Cozumel around 11.30 am. On May 23rd, they left Cozumel and paddled back to Xcaret Park in Playa del Carmen. Music : "Angel of Love" by Edward Maya. Strength, resilience and a big heart, are some of the traits that distinguish the 30 helmsmen of the 9th Sacred Mayan Journey, who for six months have trained physically and mentally to 350 oarsmen, who will guide on the journey from Pole (Xcaret) to Kuzamil (Cozumel), to receive the sacred message of goddess Ixchel.Come on May 22nd and May 23th to celebrate with them this mythical tradition at Xcaret Park! The Sacred Mayan Journey is a ritual that dates from 1250 - 1519 AD period, in which the knowledge of navigation and maritime trade routes of the ancient Maya, are combined. The central character of this ritual is Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of the moon, tides, fertility, childbirth and pregnancy, for whom they crossed the sea to bring offerings and receive the divine message for their communities.This pilgrimage stopped performing for half a century until Experiences Xcaret group rescued it from oblivion, celebrating it since nine years ago, every May, as a practice that strengthens the cultural identity in the Yucatan Peninsula. With the advice from INAH experts, accurately adheres to the original way of their rituals, dances, music, and even the type of canoes.Thanks to discipline and determination of the helmsmen, each Sacred Mayan Journey is performed successfully. They have achieved to seed in the minds of each of the oarsmen, the physical strength and mental determination to accomplish their destination; to teach through the Mayan wisdom "In lak 'ekh, Hala ken" (I am another you, you are another me), the tuning required to become a single continuous movement, paddling in harmony with the sea, that will take them to dry land. With a unique personality and a firm character, the leaders keep a determined attitude even when the strong waves hit against their canoes; when their emotions and mood are affected, it is right there when the meaning of the Sacred Mayan Journey takes a new sense in the minds of each oarsman. In every canoe the strength, optimism, tolerance and sacrifice fuse to achieve a teamwork that will keep them together forever.Mediators who through their voice and heart transform rage into serenity; fear into braveness; tiredness into vigor; anguish into relief and indifference into empathy. Constancy develops into commitment and duty into discipline. They transform self-improvement into a habit and proud into humbleness. They are the spokesmen of the goddess Ixchel that have learnt the language of the sea.
