National Monument to the Forefathers Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States/When people visit Plymouth, MA, they usually are looking to see the MayFlower ship that the Pilgrams arrived on in 1620. I was more interested to see the Monument to the Founding Fathers, featured in the documentary "Monumental". This monument shows the vision of the Pilgrams when they arrived on this land of how they felt a prosperious society could be formed. Perhaps, not only does this monument show us our history, but also could point us of how to correct the problems of the current day United States.Shot by Tampa Photographer/ Located on an 11 acre hilltop site on Allerton Street, this impressive 81-foot-tall granite statue stands to commemorate the Pilgrims who arrived in Plymouth in 1620. The monument was designed primarily by Boston sculptor Hammatt Billings, whose original design called for it to be nearly twice as tall - 150 feet (just under the Statue of Liberty’s height of 151 feet). The monument features several allegorical figures depicting virtues that the Pilgrims, known in Plymouth as the Forefathers, brought with them when they arrived here. A dedication on the monument’s northeast face reads, “National Monument to the Forefathers. Erected by a grateful people in remembrance of their labors, sacrifices and sufferings for the cause of civil and religious liberty.” The monument is free to visit and open to the public year-round. Its site is managed and maintained by the Massachusetts Dept of Conservation and Recreation. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and their furry companions (on a leash) to enjoy the monument's expansive lawn./www.seeplymouth.com
