Uppalam Harbour Beach. Pondicherry Harbour and Lighthouse View. Puducherry, centuries before its merger with India in 1954, was a Port City and flourished as a Centre of International Trade and Commerce. The Government of Puducherry (GoP) took steps to develop the minor Port of Pondicherry into a deep water Port with direct ship berthing facilities through private investment on Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis. A lighthouse was constructed in Pondicherry in the nineteenth century by the French rulers. A new lighthouse was constructed in 20th century by the government of India. The old lighthouse had first beamed light on 1 September 1836. The new lighthouse started functioning in 1979. Email [email protected] for footage license enquiry.
