Boca Reservoir Misty Morning 4K. Take a compelling flight into the early morning mist... over and around
beautiful Boca Reservoir just East of Truckee, CA. The subject was dreamy... so I sought to create suspension of time/reality in the final video. My plan was to employ ultra slow pacing and super smooth sticks :-) from start to finish, seeking to achieve long, surreal segments. Using 60fps and a quicker shutter speed (as the lighting allowed) at 100ISO and no filter, and carefully
planning flights for no conflict with light direction... I was able to achieve my goals. Also happened upon a small group of American Coots - commonly known as Mud Hens... who seemed quite amenable to my very slow, careful approach. :-) We follow this small flock for a bit... then fly directly overhead, fading out on a unique 90deg Look-Down Shot of these cute, '
meowing' Mud Hens. That's right: meowing. They do sound a lot like quiet cats - when there are enough of them around to actually hear the sounds they make. There were thousands of them in a section of the reservoir I choose not to fly. I didn't want to disturb any of them. Instead, I listened for a while on the shore. I've encountered these American Coots many times before, but
mostly in very small numbers (1-3) and I'd never heard them utter a sound. Imagine my surprise when I happened upon these thousands of Mud Hens splashing around, making a hullaballoo of cat-like sounds..? It was an awesome experience. To set the tone for the

personally. The conditions at Boca Reservoir were quite rare. In fact, the videography mission was for Pyramid Lake (40 miles to East/North)... but fortunately had to pass by Boca to get there and saw the mist & lighting conditions were optimal. This is why it's great to have a plan, shot list, goals, etc... but always good to keep an open mind for immediate
