Rusty Pelican Tampa Wedding by Drone at Rusty Pelican North Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Florida, United States/Drones add a new dimension to wedding video. On this wedding at the Rusty Pelican of Leeanne & Andrew Randolph, Tampa Photographer  uses a drone and 6 ground level cameras. This is a video of just the aerial shots from the drone, and we will be posting a highlight video with the other 6 cameras as well.Using a drone on a wedding, just like any other photography equipment is not only having the equipment, but learning and developing the skill to use it properly. We flying "line of sight" meaning we do not use a monitor, because we believe it is safe. We do aerial videos in downtown areas with sky scrapers, and feel its much safer to keep the eye on the drone rather than to look down at a monitor. As a result we have to guess what the camera is shooting, however, from experience, we have a pretty good idea of the shot it is capturing just from knowing how the gimbal is angled. We rarely will use the drone for the wedding ceremony itself because of the noise level and we do not want to be obtrusive during the vows or the sermon. We will sometimes use it on the processional depending on the volume level of the music that is being played. In this case, one of our DJs was doing the music, so we purposely had the volume at a louder level. If the bride is having a live musician with a softer instrument like a harp or guitar than we usually will not use the drone for the processional. The drone provides spectacular aerial shots for the opening of the video and we always like to use it for the formals as well. In some outdoor weddings we have been able to use it for the reception, the dancing, and in one recent wedding, even the cake cutting. We look at drones on wedding like "seasoning on food". A little bit of it adds flavor and is good, but nothing replaces the foundation of great wedding video as good ground level shots with DSLR cameras. Many of the aerial videographers have gone crazy with the drones, but you still have to have a solid ground level video. The drone is not going capture the tears of the father giving his daughter away, or the other emotions with weddings. We believe we are unique in that we specialize in both aerial and wedding photography, and use the aerial to add some creativity to wedding photography.
