Pink Lake at Kleinzee

Kleinzee, Northern Cape, South Africa On a recent visit to Kleinzee on the West Coast of South Africa I took this footage of the Kleinzee "Yacht Club" - an artificial lake created by De Beers for the residents of Kleinzee for windsurfing, sailing and other small boating activities. When De Beers decided to withdraw from the area they stopped the maintenance of the artificial lake. Previously water was pumped into the lake from the ocean.Since that has been stopped the lake is slowly drying up, causing a very high salt content. The high salt concentration allows people to easily float on the water - Just like in the Dead Sea.Another effect of the high salt content is the"pink" color of the lake.Definitely a "must visit" on any tour of the South African West Coast. Just remember to take swimming shoes as the salt crystals surrounding the lake are razor sharp and can easily cut your feet.Kleinzee used to be a small diamond mining town owned by De Beers. It lies at the mouth of the Buffels River" and is approximately 72km South East of Port Nolloth and 105km West of Springbok. It is slowly transitioning from a diamond mining town.
