Ο μεσαιωνικός οικισμός της Θάσου

The medieval settlement of Thassos .Ο μεσαιωνικός οικισμός της Θάσου. One of the most important sights of Thassos is the Castle of the island, located in the southwest, near the village Limenaria. Although only 12 kilometers from the coastline (5000 m altitude), the medieval settlement is invisible until almost the last moment, to serve the military purposes for which it was built, immediately after the Conquest of Constantinople by the Crusaders in 1204. , according to most sources. After the domination of the last Byzantine emperors, the Castle was transferred to the Gatelouzi Genoese, who were further equipped with important fortifications and a cistern that remains to this day. In any case, the Castle of Thassos experienced its greatest boom in the period after 1453, when the Turks ruled: It was one of the most populous communities on the island, extremely well protected from all kinds of raids, so it developed almost "autonomously" into one of the most important settlements of Thassos. For many centuries the Castle remained the center of administration, economy and culture of the island, until the arrival of the 20th century, which for Thassos marked the beginning of mining in Limenaria mainly, led to its gradual abandonment as residents sought work. By the end of World War II and the Civil War, the Castle was a ruined settlement of great cultural value. The old mansions and the church of Agios Athanasios, welcome visitors who want to get an idea of the life of the ancient times on the island.
