Κατάκολο Ηλείας

Κατάκολο Ηλείας. Katakolo is a coastal village and an export port of the Prefecture of Ilia, which is considered to be the port of the Tower. It is the seat of the homonymous Local Community that administratively belongs to the Municipal Unity of Pyrgos Town Tower and has a population of 509 permanent residents according to the national census of 2011. The local community also includes the settlement of Agios Andreas. The port is located in the middle of the homonymous bay, the so-called Gulf of Pisces, and its harbor is artificial. At its port is located a depot and a customs office. It was built in the late 19th century to serve as a transit station for the export of raisin to Europe. Today it operates less as a commercial port and more like a tourist, since it is a pole of attraction for cruise boats and pleasure craft. The lighthouse of the harbor, built around 1865, has been designated since 2001 as a historic preserved monument.
