Marathonisi Zakynthos

Marathonisi Zakynthos is an island in the bay of Laganas, near Zakynthos, and very close to Marathias in Keri. It is in the Natura 2000 protection program. It hosts sea turtle caretta turtles, where they give birth to their eggs. It also has many caves. The island is navigable by boat, but because it belongs to the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, anchoring is prohibited. The island was recognized as private property in 1972, but the building was banned, although it was not a forest area. For this violation of the property right, the Greek state was asked to compensate Zante - Marathonissi SA with € 2 million and € 25,000 corresponding to court fees in 2009. The company wanted to build a luxury 400-bed hotel on the island in such a way that it does not affect the turtles.
