La Fortezza della Verruca
Verruca, Vicopisano, PI, Italy.The fortress rises above the city of Calci, 540 meters up Mount Verruca. It is reachable by car from the Pisa-Firenze Superstrada, Navacchio exit, following the signs for Caprona. From there visitors proceed on foot up a trail which leads to the fortress' walls (about a 20 minute walk.) The Fortress of Verruca dominates the Pisan plane and the Arno River. Its strategic position has always been an important support for Pisa's safety, and over the centuries it has been involved bloody battles with the Florentines. The fortress permits a line of sight between Pisa and the Castle of Vicopisano, which in turn was connected to the castle at Buti and the entire Pisan “Lungomonte.”
