Tower of Mistros Euboea

Tower of Mistros Euboea. Mistros is a village in the center of Euboea, 31 km from Chalkida. Inside the village, just above the church of Agios Athanasios, stands this tower half-collapsed. It was a large tower with a base dimension of about 9.5m✖10.5m. The initial height may have exceeded 20 meters. No further information. Like other similar (square and bulky) towers of Euboea must be Venetian. The Venetians had ruled Evia since the end of the 14th century and for about a century. The Tower of Mistrus must have been built in the early decades of the 15th century, a period during which the type of construction of these towers was finalized by the Venetians. During the civil war in 1948, the army attempted to demolish the tower to build stone forts. Following the residents' protests, the shelling stopped and total destruction was avoided.
